VINTAGE CLARK & COOMBS STERLING SILVER URANIUM GLASS RING. ART DECO / EARLY MID-CENTURY.

An outstanding vintage American sterling silver ring with one of the most dramatic UV transformations I have seen. This substantial signed Clark & Coombs ring features a large pale green glass cabochon set into a wonderfully chunky sterling silver setting.

In ordinary light the stone has an understated translucent pale-green appearance - but place it under ultraviolet light and it comes alive with an intense neon green fluorescence. Please see the UV photographs.

They show the ACTUAL ring offered here. THE MAKER - CLARK & COOMBS. The ring is signed STERLING along with the distinctive C&C maker's mark attributed to Clark & Coombs of Providence, Rhode Island. Clark & Coombs was part of Providence's celebrated jewelry-manufacturing industry and became especially associated with the manufacture of finger rings. Even more interesting, surviving federal court records document Clark & Coombs actively manufacturing finger rings in Providence during the 1950s.

This is genuine signed American vintage jewelry - not a modern reproduction. The large pale-green glass stone exhibits the characteristic intense neon-green fluorescence associated with uranium glass when exposed to UV light. Normal light - subtle pale/translucent green. UV light - brilliant electric/neon green. The UV photographs were taken specifically for this listing and show the actual stone.

The stone has been identified as uranium glass based upon its color, vintage context and characteristic strong green UV fluorescence. No laboratory compositional analysis or radiation-meter testing has been performed, and this is disclosed for complete transparency. Uranium-colored glass has a fascinating history stretching back into the 19th century, when small amounts of uranium compounds were used by glassmakers to produce yellow-to-green coloration.

Its famous bright green fluorescence under ultraviolet light is now one of the features that makes surviving pieces especially sought after by UV and antique-glass collectors. The ring is clearly marked STERLING. Total ring weight, including the glass stone. This is a substantial vintage sterling setting rather than lightweight silver-tone costume jewelry. Please note that the total weight includes the glass cabochon, so the actual silver weight is less than 8.667 grams.

The top/profile measures approximately 18.3 mm. The substantial shoulders are approximately 8 mm across in the measured area, giving the ring a bold vintage statement-ring appearance. The finger opening appears to be approximately a US size 8 from measurement. Please carefully review the ring-sizing photographs/measurements provided before purchasing, as vintage ring sizing can vary slightly depending on the measuring method. The sterling setting shows age-appropriate surface wear, scratches, patina/oxidation and evidence of prior use.

The glass cabochon shows vintage surface wear including haze/light abrasion and wear along portions of the facet edges. Tiny internal inclusions/bubbles are also visible under close magnification. These characteristics have NOT been hidden or polished away. Please enlarge and examine all photographs carefully. The stone remains securely mounted at the time of listing.
