Pair Gorham Sterling Silver Mounted American Brilliant Cut Glass Moon Flask Decanters, c. Exceptional matched pair of late Victorian American Brilliant Period cut glass moon flask decanters with original Gorham sterling silver mounts, each marked STERLING and S1404. The Gorham silver mount production dates these to approximately 1892, placing them firmly in the height of the American Brilliant Period.
Each decanter features a flattened circular moon flask body with applied crystal handle, deeply hand-cut geometric decoration, and a hinged sterling silver repoussé floral cover. The cut glass displays brilliant hobstar, fan, miter, cane/strawberry diamond, and star-cut motifs with strong clarity, sharp cutting, and excellent sparkle. The sterling mounts are richly detailed with floral repoussé decoration, beaded borders, and original hinged lids.
The matching pair presentation makes these especially desirable, as single examples are far more commonly encountered than complete pairs. There is no signature noted as I have been unable to see one, so they are not being attributed to Hawkes, Libbey, Hoare, or Dorflinger. However, the quality of the cutting is fully consistent with high-grade American Brilliant Period production.
The sterling mounts are definitively Gorham. Material: Sterling silver and hand-cut crystal.Form: Moon flask decanter / spirits jug. The crystal is bright and clear with strong brilliance and sharp cutting. The sterling silver mounts show attractive age-appropriate patina. Hinges are intact and lids sit properly. No major chips, cracks, repairs, or cloudiness noted.
